We-Ko-Pa Golf Club: Saguaro Course
Played We-ko-Pa in 2010 with my buddy Ronnie and some other work peeps. I have no photos and really no memories of the course. This is another of the write-ups I was going to skip because of that and the fact that I already talked about the surrounding area in my Troon North write up or Desert Forest.
However, I did think enough of this to put it into my top 100 and even though I don’t remember much, I had to have ranked it there for a reason. Again, I really like desert golf, we can’t get it in the Philly area and I think the desert landscape adds to the wow factor of a course. Because there is no housing anywhere on the courses here, I must’ve really enjoyed that home-free backdrop with a Coore/Crenshaw course to boot. I rank Monument higher but if you look at the Google Earth and compare the encroachment of housing, not sure why I do. This is like Desert Forest where I do remember some of the houses on Troon North getting pretty tight against the course and for a lot of the holes, spoiling the backdrop but not here or at Desert Forest.

We-Ko-Pa is pretty far out from Scottsdale, but if you’re in Old Town, it’s probably not much further than Troon North. I have to go back to Phoenix in 2021 so will put Cholla on the list to play and see if I can get some Saguaro pix to jog my memory and then update. UPDATE: Played Cholla in 2021. While I didn’t get photos of Saguaro I can tell you Cholla didn’t disappoint. Maybe not top 100 but not far off.
I am guessing I played here with Johnny Cocktails too so I’ll talk briefly about the joys of a round with JC. First, the music selection needs to be rammy. If my Bluetooth is on and a Decemberists or Ben Folds song comes on, he’ll say, “What the F is this Loft shit and will take over the tunes.” Then, cocktails. With JC these are a critical component of a round of golf. As I mentioned elsewhere on the site, JC has a 30 point course ranking system: 10 points for access to booze, 10 points for hotness of cart girls and 10 points for quality of the course. Not sure where Saguaro ranks. Finally every time your ball finds the sand, you will hear JC bellow from wherever he is, “It’s a trap.” Yes like Admiral Ackbar in Star Wars. This is still quite amusing even after hearing it over 100 times.
