Cabot Cliffs

The Canadian Bandon. Do not confuse this with the Canadian Bacon – which I’ve never heard of unless it’s on an Egg McMuffin. Like if you are up at Cabot and ask for a breakfast sandwich and they ask you for a meat selection, and if you then say Canadian Bacon they look at you like you just asked for a Mountie Strip Show. I’ve never had a round, Spam-looking piece of meat in Canada that they proudly call “Canadian Bacon.” But I digress. Cabot is just like a Canadian-version of Bandon Dunes. Remote. Beautiful. An unforgettable golf trip.
You could plop the Cliffs and Links onto Bandon and they would fit in perfectly. The Cliffs is a top ten, It’s a beauty, eh? Played in 2019. The picture above is taken at #17 – the most amazingly photogenic hole on the course. Mind you I am on the left and the ground is very slanted so I am not such a wee man as this picture might suggest, though my buddy Don on the right is a pretty big dude (and Michigan sucks). But like the courses at Pebble and Cape Kidnappers, Coore and Crenshaw route a course featuring in-land holes that are as awesome as those on the edge of the ocean (or St. Lawrence waterway as it is).
Obviously if you come, you have to stay on property. The restaurant and bar there are great. We ate across the street too which was nice and passed a Lick-a-Chick on the way from the airport. WTF is a Lick-a-Chick you ask? Thought was a strip-club, or yet another nickname for the Canadian Ballet, but eh…
Back to the course. Holes 17 and 18 stand-out but this is another of the courses (Like New South Wales and Pacific Dunes) where I remember every hole is one amazing view after another and one interesting strategic puzzle after another. I really have no negatives on the course. If you’re into a remote setting with an amazing set of courses, you will not be disappointed. If you’re dying for a place to bring the wife and kids for a family vaca, don’t. This is golf. There is absolute shit to do and see in the area besides these courses (sorry you Inverness Canucks who read this and take offence).
