Oakmont

Oakmont is another of those “kick in the nuts” type of courses that still has to be in anyone’s top courses to play. It’s tough. Our caddie dropped a ball from shoulder height on the practice green (which is just a continuation of the 9th green) and the ball rolled 25 feet or more. He said, “Welcome to Oakmont.”

I’ve been there twice, once before the tree removal and once after. The photo above is obviously after. I don’t have a lot of photos from here – they were pretty strict about phones and cameras and I didn’t want to get our host or the caddie in trouble.

How tough is Oakmont? On one of the par threes, I hit an awesome shot. Caddie was saying, “That looks good, that looks good. Oh shit, you’re fucked.” I asked how it went from looking good to fucked in one sentence. He said, “You missed it by about an inch and as such it rolled into the toughest trap on the course. Oh and you’re short-sided, too.” Do not expect to shoot well here.

We stayed in the house just off the 18th fairway the one time. I suggest if you have the means, do that too. Makes for a great round. Clubhouse is awesome and the back porch is a great way to unwind after a round. If you’re new to Pittsburgh, take a drive downtown (pronounced danntann). There’s a Primanti’s there or go to the original in the Strip District. Nothing says Pittsburgh like a sloppy sandwich with meat, cheese, coleslaw, tomato, french fries and two huge slabs of Italian bread. Oh and have an IC Light. It’s not good but when in Rome. They didn’t have Millers when I went to Oakmont and I had to settle for a Coor Light. That’s what my dad actually calls it, a Coor Light. He’ll tell you to grab him a Coor Light and when you try and correct him and tell him it’s Coors, he’ll say “No I only want one.”
